Abrams said he’s open to the idea of a gay Star Wars character in the next films.
“When I talk about inclusivity its not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity so of course,” he told reporters at the US-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards on Thursday. “To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”
The director, 49, said he’s always been focused on inclusivity in the franchise and making the films “look the way the world looks” – even when it came to casting.

Abrams previously spoke about his decision to hire both a female and a person of color as the new leads in The Force Awakens.
“Writing this script with Larry Kasdan, I didn’t know what Rey was going to look like, I didn’t know what Finn or Poe would look like,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I just knew that this movie needed to look the way the world looks.”
