Lady Gaga’s Model Moment! Mother Monster Rules the Runway for Marc Jacobs

Mother Monster is now a Mother Model!

Grammy-winning singer and Golden Globe-winning actress Lady Gaga can add New York Fashion Week catwalker to her impressive résumé. Gaga ruled the Marc Jacobs runway Thursday night, joining Kendall Jenner and the rest of Marc’s modeling squad at the designer’s Fall 2016 show in New York City.

Gaga wore an oversize black coat with fur-embellished sleeves over a neck-tie blouse, plus, mega-high platform boots, a green top-handle bag and rock-star inspired makeup. Her walk comes less than a week after she hit the Grammys red carpet in a custom Marc Jacobs electric blue double-breasted satin coat dress, a look inspired by the late David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust days.

Backstage at the show, François Nars, founder and creative director for NARS cosmetics, shared the inspiration behind the dark, heavy makeup seen on the models.

“Black is the new black,” he began. “The clothes are so incredibly beautiful, the idea was to make the girl quite dramatic. Marc and I always like strange, no matter what. That’s the direction we go no matter what — whether people like it or not. Inspiration was from rock stars like Alice Cooper — very New York, very underground, very strange. It’s important that the girls were more characters and personalities instead of just modeling. More like performers.”

Gaga definitely fit the “performer” vibe, proving she’s a true artistic chameleon.

“Marc had a board, there were a lot of pictures of punks,” Nars added. “It was the attitude, the wildness, rebellious. Alice Cooper, pictures from Kiss, that type of attitude. Wild at heart.”

As for the bleached brows, they’ve sort of become a Jacobs’ signature, seen often on his runways and in his campaigns.

“We bleached the brows because it makes it a blank canvas to change the structure of the eye — make it more round,” Nars said. “If you’re limited by an eyebrow sometimes you just have to follow the shape of the eye which is more limiting. It looks almost like a mask when they go on stage. And the clothes being so extremely dramatic, it’s like strange creatures walking on the runway

Kendall also hit the catwalk, wearing another layered look: A feather-trim jacket, neck-tie blouse, matching tweed skirt and leather platform boots with at least a 6 inch heel.

Aside from the rock star vibes, Jacobs’ show also had a political undertone. The designer designed a campaign tee showing his support for Hillary Clinton (as did the designers at Tory Burch and Public School), which he wore under his shirt at the show.

“My support for Hillary is grounded on our long-standing shared belief in equality,” Jacobs told Vogue. “I am proud to share this T-shirt as a champion for equal rights, for the progress we have made, and for the hope of continued progress with Hillary as President.”
