The co-host of the new limited series PEOPLE’s List, says he’s most often approached about his work in: coming-of-age classic Stand By Me, the FOX/Syfy channel series Sliders and his quarterback role in Jerry Maguire and that he can predict which of the three fans will ask him about. How does he do it? With a quick assessment of age and apparel.
“I’m 42 now, so if it’s someone in their 40s and they’re coming up to me I know it’s going to be about Stand By Me,” O’Connell tells PEOPLE. “I know from a generational stand point that’s what it’s going to be. If they’re wearing a superhero shirt or some sort of science fiction-y Comic-con garb, a Star Wars shirt, they’re probably going to ask me about a science fiction show I did called Sliders. If it’s a sports fan, like someone who is into sports at a sports bar or watching football, they’re probably going to talk to me about Jerry Maguire.
Tune in to PEOPLE’s List on June 11 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC, and read more about O’Connell in the new issue of PEOPLE on stands now.
However, O’Connell says these days, his life is focused on his twin daughters, Dolly and Charlie, 7, with wife Rebecca Romijn.
“My typical day now revolves around them,” he says proudly of his first-graders. “I didn’t know what the Nae Nae was until my kids told me. It’s crazy that my 7-year-old girls are teaching me how to Whip and Nae Nae. It’s really fun.”
