Prince William and Princess Kate Help Queen Elizabeth Have A Very Special Birthday Party With her Favorite Animals – Horses

It’s good to be the Queen!

Queen Elizabeth II had her real 90th birthday in April, and is set to have a very public official celebration in June with the Trooping the Colour parade and a special tea party. But, on Sunday, she had her family around her as she enjoyed a unique birthday tribute based around some of her favorite animals – horses.

Hosted by son Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and surrounded by grandchildren including Prince William and wife Princess Kate and Prince Harry, the Queen watched the Royal Windsor Horse Show in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

This year the annual event was very different. Telling the story of the Queen’s life and her reign of 64 years – including landmark moments like World War II and the Coronation in 1953 – the show brought together performers and displays from horses and riders from around the world.

In his program notes, Charles said that “it could not be more fitting” that horses, “of myriad breeds and colour” are joining “600 sailors, soldiers, airmen and women who make up this evening’s celebration. As we marvel at the incomparable skill of rider and horse alike . . . We can know with some certainty that a rather memorable spectacle awaits us.”

Non-horse performers include Dancing with the Stars alum Katherine Jenkins, royal favorite James Blunt (who was at his piano for Harry’s Invictus Games opening ceremony last week) , Helen Mirren and Shirley Bassey.

The Queen, in a sea green dress and matching jacket by Angela Kelly, and Philip arrived in the Scottish state Coach, built 1830, to be greeted by Charles and Camilla.

In the stands already were Kate, in scarlet Zara jacket, the same bright color that matched William and Harry’s collars and cuffs on their Windsor uniform jackets. Sitting next to Kate, who also wore a Dolce and Gabbana dress, was Prince Donatus of Hesse – the Queen’s third cousin and a relation of Philip – while his wife was between William and Harry.
