“She was surrounded by her family. It was in the middle of the night and it was a race to get there,” Astin, 45, told Entertinament Tonight. “It was a very powerful experience. And then, in her last moments, she was at peace. ”
Duke died on Tuesday, after a battle with sepsis that was a result of a ruptured intestine, which Astin told ET had left his 69-year-old mother “suffering terribly.”
Following her death, Astin took to Instagram paying tribute to the actress in a heartfelt post alongside a picture showing Duke holding him as a baby.
“This morning, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, matriarch and the exquisite artist, humanitarian, and champion for mental health, Anna PATTY DUKE Pearce, closed her eyes, quieted her pain and ascended to a beautiful place,” he wrote alongside the pic.
The Goonies and The Lord of the Rings star also started a CrowdRise mental health project in his mother’s memory, as she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1982.
In his tribute, Astin referred to his mom as a “tireless warrior” and detailed how she worked and lobbied for mental health awareness, which he now wants to continue.
