U.S. Swimmer Simone Manuel Wins the Silver in the 50-meter Freestyle After Losing by .02 Seconds

It’s another silver medal for Simone Manuel.

The 20-year-old swimmer from Houston, Texas, took second place in the 50-meter freestyle race on Saturday night.

It was a very close competition. The race was won by Denmark’s Pernille Blume, who finished in 24.07. Manuel was just .02 seconds behind with a 24.09. The bronze winner, Belarus swimmer Aliaksandra Herasimenia, finished the race in 24.11.

The 2016 Rio Olympics have been good to Manuel.

First, the first-time Olympian won the silver as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team. Then, she took the gold in the 100-meter freestyle event, tying with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak. The win made Manuel the first African American to win an individual event in Olympic swimming.
