The country crooner, who never had sushi, was taken to celeb-loved Japanese restaurant Nobu in New York City by pal and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. And of course, the first-time tasting was all caught on camera.
“You never tried sushi before?” Fallon asked Shelton before sampling the Japanese delicacies. “I mean, no, not the raw stuff,” the Voice coach admitted.
The comedian served as Shelton’s sushi sensei as the pair started with a sip of sake, which the 9-time CMA winner hilariously said tasted like “easter egg coloring.”
And when it came time for sushi and sashimi, Shelton could not stomach the taste or textures. He described the tuna nigiri as having the consistency of “Play-Doh” while a thin piece of uncooked salmon had the musician covering his eyes in disgust.
But credit to Shelton and Fallon, they were adventurous to try shitasu (fried bait) and a shot of sea urchin gonads.
Looks like Gwen Stefani won’t be spending sushi date nights with her boyfriend anytime soon.
On Tuesday’s Voice finale, Shelton debuted his new single, “She’s Got a Way with Words.” His tenth studio album If I’m Honest was released on May 20.
