On Wednesday, San Diego police received a 911 call at around 11 a.m. after a body was found inside a suitcase behind a hotel, San Diego Police Department spokesperson Lt. Ray Valentin tells PEOPLE.
A man who lives at the hotel, and was taking out trash, found the body when he noticed the suspicious looking suitcase next to some trashcans.
When he took a closer look, the man saw hair coming out of the suitcase and some exposed human body parts, Valentin tells PEOPLE.
The man told local media he believed homeless people had left the suitcase. However, upon further inspection he realized it contained a body.
“I was trying to pick it up by the handle. I was amazed by the weight so I dropped it and I kind of looked down and I saw hair, like black hair.”
Police are waiting until they notify the victim’s family before they release her identity. According to Valentin, the victim appears to be around the age of 21.

Police are unsure whether or not the victim was staying at the hotel, Valentin says.
“The investigation is still ongoing. We are following some leads but at this time we don’t have any solid leads,” Valentin tells PEOPLE.
The body, which was not dismembered, has been sent to the local medical examiner where an autopsy is being performed.
They are urging anyone with information to call the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
